How Finnish sounds
  • Finnish is phonetic: say every letter as written.
  • Stress is always on the first syllable of a word.
  • Double letters are held longer (luukku). Long vowels (aa, ii, uu, ÀÀ) last about twice as long as short ones.
  • Γ€ is like the "a" in "cat". y is like German "ΓΌ" (say "ee" with rounded lips). r is lightly rolled. j sounds like English "y".
  • Diphthongs: ai β‰ˆ "eye", ei β‰ˆ "ay", oi β‰ˆ "oy", ui β‰ˆ "oo-ee", uo β‰ˆ "oo-oh", au β‰ˆ "ow".
  • In respellings, "ΓΌ" is the Finnish y and "Γ€" is the Finnish Γ€. Capital letters mark the stressed syllable.
